Headaches can be located on one side of the face, forehead, behind the eyes or anywhere on the entire head. What Are The Types Of Headaches?

There are three main categories of headaches and they include Primary Headaches, Secondary Headaches and Cranial Neuralgias, facial pain and other headaches. The most common headaches are Primary Headaches such as a migraine, cluster headache, and tension headache. Secondary Headaches are a symptom of an underlying structural or infectious problem in the head or neck. The final type of headache includes Cranial Neuralgias, facial pain and other headaches. Cranial neuralgia describes the inflammation of one of the 12 cranial nerves coming from the brain that control the muscles and carry sensory signals from the head and neck. Some of these nerves can actually cause facial pain.

What Are The Causes Of Headaches?

The pain from a headache originates from the tissues and structures that surround the skull or the brain. Tissues that surround the skull, sinuses, eyes, ears, arteries, and nerves can become inflamed or irritated and can cause a headache. The most common headaches are Primary Headaches such as a migraine, cluster headache, and tension headache. The Primary Headaches can be triggered by alcohol, certain foods, sleep patterns, posture, fasting, and stress. Secondary Headaches are a symptom of an underling structural or infectious problem in the head or neck such as dehydration, dental problems, brain aneurysm, arterial tears, flu, sinus pressure, and many more. Headaches are unique to each person so it is important to recognize patterns or factors that can trigger a headache.

What Are The Symptoms Of Headaches?

A headache is a pain in the head or face and can even include pain in the upper neck. The pain can be a dull ache, tightness or pressure on any part of the head or neck. The pain can feel like a clamp squeezing or even sharp pains. The headaches can last 30 minutes to a few days and the pain can get stronger and ease up throughout the day. The most common symptoms include mild to moderate pressure in the front, top or sides of the head, trouble sleeping, tired, irritability, trouble focusing, sensitivity to light or noise, and muscle aches.

What Are The Treatments Of Headaches?

Headaches are unique to each person so it is important to recognize patterns or factors that can trigger a headache. If certain foods, drinks, and stresses cause the headache, try to remove them from your diet to see if it helps to reduce the headaches. Most headaches can be treated with over the counter pain medications like aspirin, Tylenol, ibuprofen and Aleve. If these do not work, doctors can recommend stronger pain medications, injections, and even surgery depending on the cause of the pain. If you have headaches all of the time or they are extremely painful, it is important to consult a doctor.
